Periodontal disease - also referred to as periodontitis or gum disease - is an inflammatory condition triggered by bacteria (plaque). It damages the tissues and bone holding your teeth in place and can lead to loose teeth or tooth loss if not treated.

Some people are more likely to get periodontitis than others. The likelihood of developing the disease is affected by the following risk factors:

E F F E C T S
If left untreated, gum disease can damage the gums and bone that support your teeth.
Over time, this will lead to teeth becoming loose and being lost prematurely.
Periodontitis has also been linked to general health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and dementia. This means it may have an impact on your overall health.

Periodontitis cannot be completely cured, but it can usually be managed successfully. The most important part of this is keeping your teeth and gums clean at home and reducing any risk factors where possible.
Your dentist will support you with regular check-ups and professional cleaning to help keep your gums stable.
In some cases, gum disease can be more difficult to control. If this happens, your dentist may recommend seeing Dr Fergus Machin, who provides additional care for patients with more advanced gum problems.
